Toronto’s contamination exception

Toronto’s current Green Bin guidance lists paper towels, tissues and napkins, with an explicit exception for items soiled with cleaning chemicals: those go in the Garbage Bin. This is a location-specific municipal rule, not a national approval for every paper product or contaminant.

Do not flush other paper formats

The city’s drain guidance also directs facial tissues and paper towels away from flushing. Do not assume that a bathroom-tissue category, a recycled claim or a biodegradable marketing word gives other paper formats the same drain route. Keep the intended product and the municipal instruction separate.

Separate paper and packaging waste

For a practical check, identify the used item and what it is soiled with, then use your own municipality’s current sorting service. A dry outer cardboard box, a plastic overwrap and a used tissue are different waste items. They should not receive one blanket answer because they arrived in the same case.

Other municipalities remain unknown

Our finder provides the Toronto source as an example and leaves other locations unknown. It does not ask for your address or automatically approve composting. Building collection arrangements and current local acceptance still need checking, especially outside Toronto or for paper contaminated with substances not covered by the quoted rule.
